A good friend of mine said recently that the love narrative force-fed by media and literature is very distinct from reality. He was both sad and sympathetic but nonetheless worried about what we bequeath to our children. This got me thinking about how generally social relations and the nexus that binds all together is compromised and yet our biggest concern is political and sometimes economic but never social. We pay lip service to social cohesion at best and yet all of our connectedness and bonds are gradually weakening. The only mantra we have is toughen up. I ask toughen up to what end?.
