A good friend who tutors math and computer science in an urban area writes the following about the new Common Core math standards: The Common Core Curriculum is the greatest failure in mathematics since the circle squarers of Ancient Greece. Several Algebra 1 students this semester have been taught to solve basic algebraic equations with guess-and-check techniques. At that stage, you are no longer teaching Algebra, you are teaching test taking. This will result in a generation of students with marginally higher test scores and weaker mathematical foundations who will struggle in higher level math courses that demand more than a cookie cutter, “what’s the formula” approach to problem solving. Mathematics is about logic and reasoning, not learning through gimmicks and rote memorization.
