A great triumph for European Christendom. In preceding decades the balance of power was altered in Europe. Poland had to deal with the rise of its mortal enemy Russia on its borders. The Holy Roman Empire had transformed after 1648 and in any case was a loose confederation of states. The Venetian Republic was a consistent front line, often a Third Arm of the Church alongside Rome and Austria. The balance of power in the Islamic world was also changing. A resurgent Persia under the Safavid Dynasty on one hand, and the threat to Mughal hegemony in India would set the stage for things to come. By the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire would begin to crumble as the Balkan nations would break free. The Arabs took a little more time...
