A lecture by Angela Rodel, doctoral student in ethnomusicology, UCLA Summary: Since 1989, popfolk, a pop music style that uses Bulgarian and Balkan folk elements, has enjoyed enormous popularity in Bulgaria. Many ethnic Slav male singers in this genre often draw on hajdutin or vojvoda imagery, especially when performing the sub-genre of popfolk known as Pirin Folk. The paper will briefly discuss the roots of this imagery within Bulgarian history and examine how two contemporary performers, Volodya Stoyanov and Slavi Trifonov, appropriate this imagery in order to position themselves within cultural and political discourses.
