A little bit of Great White 101. Unlike a lot of sharks such as tigers, GWS do not have eyelids known as nictitating membranes. In these other sharks the nictitating membrane can move across and cover the eye to protect it. GWS do not have it, and instead roll their eyes back in the socket for protection. You will see them do it often when biting boat motors, attacking seals and sea lions or when bumping into cages. Also this pic is a great example of their counter shading. When viewed from above, the dark grey blends in perfectly with the sea floor providing cover for hunting sharks, and protection against other predators through camouflage. Thanks to Dyer Island Conservation Trust and Marine Dynamics for the pic
