A lot has been written about Brittany Maynard and the choice she made to end her life with dignity in the face of a terminal, painful illness. I thank her for taking her case public in her final act of life. It was a brave, bold move. In the final days/weeks of my fathers life, this issue has become brutally real and personal. I will spare you the details for the sake of the giant, honorable, and proud man who is Tom Elliott. Suffice to say he is suffering more than our animals ever would. This makes me and my family crazy with a helpless pain that many of you have or will experience. Im so, so sorry for that. Dad is a staunch Catholic and may not have chosen Brittanys path. But he wanted the choice and said as much before he lost his ability to speak or function. All that is left for him is waiting in agony... self induced starvation, bed sores, confusion/anxiety, pain, and ultimately organ failure. And thats the dignified description. Our country is built on the principals of personal freedom, human rights, and separation of church and state. We need to respect personal beliefs while also sanctioning the right of personal choice in the event of terminal illness. Doctors that help make this possible should not be criminals. Hospice is great but isnt the answer in every case. Its time to bring death with dignity legislation to California. For those who know me well, youll know this is my next project. I hope youll join the effort.May you never need to make this hard choice. Peace. compassionandchoices.org.
