A lot of people object to money in principle, and look forward to the future time when we would theoretically no longer need it. An example of this mentality would be the Venus Project. Passing references in Star Trek also support the idea that money will have been eliminated by the 24th century. This idea is profoundly wrong. The problem is not money, it is abuse of power through hoarding behavior, and manipulation of both natural and market capital. Which leads to financial control of governments displacing democratic control. What money actually does is extremely beneficial. It allows comparison of value between multiple forms, such as labor, energy, materials. Progress is mostly about figuring out how to do more with less, and you cant do that if you dont have a versatile method of measurement. Performance cant improve unless you can answer the question, what is this costing me? We could potentially develop new accounting methods to augment currency. But we can never stop quantifying value. Whatever replaces money in the future will still be a unit of cost or value.
