A message from Bishop Wright regarding Medicaid expansion. We appreciate his leadership on this important issue. Georgia faces a health care crisis. As Christians we are called to love and care for our neighbors as ourselves. With 20 percent of Georgians unable to afford medical insurance, expanding Medicaid would insure them, create up to 70,000 good jobs, stabilize hospitals at risk of closing, and bring billions of dollars to our state. This would be good theology and good for Georgia. However, House Bill 990 transfers the responsibility for the decision to expand Medicaid from Governor Deal to the General Assembly, which cant act until 2015. Meanwhile, an estimated 10 people will die in Georgia every day from lack of access to health care. We cant in good conscience stand by and let lives hang in the balance. As people of faith, it is time to speak for the poor.
