And now we give you Number 9 9 – “DETROIT ROCK CITY” – KISS The self-proclaimed “Hottest Band in the World” may not be everyone’s cup of tea (myself included), but you can’t argue with the success of these masters of Heavy Metal and Self Promotion. How many bands do you know of that have marketed their own line of coffeehouses and mini golf courses, founded their own Arena Football League team, and even sell a custom painted casket? And in the midst of all of this, they have managed to write a song or two, including this one released in 1976 off their album “Destroyer.” The song (a long-time concert opener), tells the story of a man driving down the road on a Saturday night trying to desperately make a rock show. The relentless guitar work and exploding drums on this song almost serve as a stand in for revving engines, squealing tyres, and thundering exhaust. More to the point, it’s the kind of song you would love to have blaring out of the stereo of your Trans-Am as you barrel down the highway at two in the morning (which is what KISS was going for in the first place, probably).
