A new Report evaluating the mine has raised serious questions - TopicsExpress

A new Report evaluating the mine has raised serious questions about the transparency around the Kangaluwi Mining Project, the economic viability of the Project, and the high likelihood of environmental contamination from it. Based on new data assessing possible impacts on sustainable tourism and other community development initiatives, the mine is likely to result in a net loss of jobs for local communities. It is also likely to undermine international aid investment in programs that are working to improve community livelihoods. Expert review in the Report suggested that, based on information available to date, the social and environmental risks far outweigh any potential benefits from the mining Project. Despite being undertaken by an Australian mining company, the Project falls well short of any international best practice standards and in fact the technical documentation presented by them to Zambian Authorities was found to be grossly insufficient. The incredibly poor quality of information presented would result in outright rejection of the Project in developed countries which raises the question, should Zambia allow international miners to operate to lesser standards than they would have to in their own countries? The report also recommends that before any mining is allowed inside Zambia’s Protected Areas, Zambia should put in place both policy and legislation to properly regulate it.
