A number of PASSHE schools have put out their letter of intent to possibly retrench. Compare the tone between Clarions letter (further down on this site) and that of Edinboros president: Dear Edinboro University Colleagues, As you know, we are experiencing the results of years of inadequate state funding for public higher education. At the same time, the many recent accolades the University has won are evidence of our commitment to building a successful future for our University and our students. We are Fighting Scots—resilient, creative and determined. In order to ensure this bright future, we must keep all courses of action open — even those options we intend to work tenaciously to avoid. Today, a letter was delivered to APSCUF to notify the union that the elimination of faculty positions is a possibility at the end of the coming academic year. We do not intend to retrench faculty, but our contractual obligations leave us no choice but to provide such notification now even though retrenchment would be our last resort. After a challenging 2013-14, we are now headed in the right direction with clear signs that our collaborative hard work to cut expenses and increase revenue has paid off. In addition, we sought and received approval from the Board of Governors of our plans for tuition and fee flexibility. And, key new members of our Finance and Admissions teams are now in place. Vice President for Finance and Administration Guilbert Brown brings extensive experience in financial management and institutional planning that will help ensure the effectiveness of our plans for financial stability. Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Services Christopher LaRusso has taken successful steps to improve our recruitment of students who will persist and succeed at Edinboro University. Already, new student enrollment is stabilizing. More importantly, we are committed to working together with APSCUF and with all University employees to secure the long-term future of Edinboro University. Collaboration is challenging work, especially in stressful and complex situations. But, like you, I believe that only through working together can we surmount current challenges and create a thriving future. Sincerely, Julie
