This is one of those verses that gives a spiritual truth that has its origin in the Old Testament. Christians are here called "Living stones" as well. We are "In Christ" who is the temple and we likewise are "Temples of God" where God dwells in the hearts of each believer through their spiritual birth. See these Old Testament names that are placed on Christians? The Old Testament priest was called by God to offer up sacrifices daily as he ministered in the temple. These sacrifices were shadows of Christ who offered Himself as a sacrifice once for sinners. We as Christians are to offer up to God spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:5 KJV) "By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. (Hebrews 13:15 KJV)
