A rant…in 1975, the Boston Red Sox had a rookie Center Fielder name Fred Lynn. What distinguished him from other players was his penchant to dive for balls and make impossible catches. He did this throughout his rookie season, was named Rookie of the Year and led the Red Sox to the World Series which was considered one of the greatest World Series ever played. There was one day that season that exemplified his season. In a DH with the Yankees in NY, the Red Sox won both game in shutouts. In the first game, Lynn ran in a dead sprint deep into left field, dove for the ball and somersaulted a couple of times due to his momentum. Dick Stockton was the Red Sox play-by-play guy….when Lynn made the catch Stockton lost his voice calling the play. The next game Lynn hit a triple and scored the only run of the game. I am mentioning Lynn because yesterday the Reds Rookie CF, Billy Hamilton, made a sprawling catch in Right Center. However, he apparently hurt is “knuckles”? on the play and did not return. Earlier this year Josh Hamilton and Mr Overhype Bryce Harper both injured their thumbs diving head first into bases. Really….knuckles? Thumps? Lynn just kept making great plays every game. Today’s “phenoms”? all I can say it “toughen up Buttercups”.
