A reason why once all is said and done the Russian Federation will wind up in the end projecting the dominate sphere of influence over the Ukraine is that geopoliticaly they have no option. From their strategic point of view should the Ukraine become part of the EU it will leave their Federation defenseless in the face of a land invasion. In contrast the EU and the United States can defend their interests without the integration of the Ukraine into the West. When one side sees absolute necessity to national security and the other does not motivation as well as the internal political ability to rally resources goes to the side experiencing the greater threat. This means a new cold war. Which has one potential silver lining in all of this ... our films may get better.
