A recent report in the Tallahassee Democrat has been weighing heavily on my heart. FAMU Pres. Elmira Mangum has reported that our student enrollment for this year has dropped by some 1,234 students meaning that our enrollment has dropped from over 10,000 students to 9,500 students. That just will not do. I cannot believe that we are allowing the difficulties of our GREAT institution to get so many of us to move away from encouraging our children to enroll in FAMU! I see its time for some REAL RATTLER MEMOS to go out! We are facing a very crucial time in our institutions history. We are in a period where it seems that everything is stacked against us from outside and from within. This is NOT the time for us to say, Well, it sho looks like FAMU aint the place fo my chillun to go. They cant control thangs up there anyhow. This is the time for us to SACK UP and send MORE of our kids to FAMU despite whats going on at DA HILL! This is where we as parents and Alumni have to fight even harder. I can tell you that everywhere I go I encourage youth to go to FAMU. When a parent tells me, Well isnt FAMU on the decline? or Arent they in trouble from that scandal? I tell them, NOPE, were just getting better! I have always been a believer in the fact that FAMU is only as strong as the PEOPLE and the IDEALS of the institution! If the IDEALS of the PEOPLE die because of hardship at the institution and you can run and turn your back on FAMU when you know that its IDEALS have been there for you, then you are not a REAL RATTLER! REAL RATLLERS BREED more RATTLERS and they push and BELIEVE in the IDEALS of the FOREFATHERS of FAMU! Dont let FAMU fall! Pick it up! Give FAMU your children so it can continue to produce those Engineers, Pharmacists, Lawyers, Ambassadors, Musicians, and Teachers! FAMU has always been, and still is, the Standard by which other HBCUS have followed and if THEY can destroy FAMU, then THEY can destroy the others! Because they know that if they can cut off the head of the SNAKE then the body will follow! FAMU NOW! FAMU FOREVER!
