A small group of tech-minded individuals founded Digitale Gesellschaft in Berlin in 2010 because they saw a gap in the representation of digital rights in Germany, says Volker Tripp, the groups political officer. “We had the Pirate party on one hand and then the more established political parties, but net issues werent in focus,” he says. Many in the Pirate party did care about digital rights, Tripp says, but they were never able to coalesce enough to influence the treatment of civil rights in the digital arena. “We needed a different type of organization advocating on this issue,” he says.
