A southern specie moving north. Since first reported in Panama in 2013, the Whistling heron (Syrigma sibilatrix) has been on the wish list of all Panamanian bird watchers. The 2014 brought a special gift, a couple of these magnificent birds had made a small pond in Gorgona their home for the moment. The Whistling Heron was considered endemic to South America, where it can be found in two regions. A northern population, occurs in the llanos grasslands of Venezuela and eastern Colombia, and another population is widely distributed in the grasslands of Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and northeastern Argentina. It is believe that long periods of droughts have made this specie make the move into our territory adding this way a new specie to the now growing bird list of Panama. The Whistling Heron name after its distinctive high pitch call prefers to forage for large arthropods in open wet grasslands. We are anxious to see what the 2015 have to offer.
