A very cordial and big hello to everyone, (Or should we say BELLO !) We appreciate your interest in becoming one of us, UCLU Thai Society member. This email is to inform everyone about our exciting events in the coming year as well as to invite everyone to sign up and join our society. We have already held several events for our members to get to know more of each other, and most importantly to explore our Thai traditions. Here are some of the events that we hosted; 1. UCL Dern Len and Dinner: Took place on 28th September 2014 and there were approximately 60 attendees! This is a walk around UCL and central London arranged for new members to explore the city and familiarize themselves with the area. It is also a chance for them to ask both academic and other general questions they may have. 2. Rubnong: Took place on 4th October 2014 at UCL and there were approximately 70 attendees! Rubnong consists of recreational activities that bonds members of the society with a variety of teamwork games. This event does not only gives chances for all members to introduce themselves but also to form stronger bonds between each member in our society. However, this is just to start off the academic year. Here are the upcoming events that are waiting for you; 1. University of London Dinner (in Association with Teach For Thailand) Date: 23rd October Venue: Suda, Covent Garden Details: This casual dinner gives the opportunity for Thai students in UCL to meet with other Thai students from the universities of London. It also allows students of the same career path and same course to meet and discuss with their studies. 2. Temple Trip/Loy Kratong Date: 2nd of November Venue: Buddhapadipa Temple, Wimbledon Details: Loy Kratong is one of the most important Thai traditional events. The history of Loy Kratong is that after we have been using and polluting the water throughout the year, it is a time for us to show apology to Pra Mae Kong Kah who Thai people believe to be a god that protects the water. We would do this by floating bread or a cut banana tree with candles and light on it. This is one of the most beautiful Thai traditions that should not be missed. 3. Amusement park Date: October/November Venue: Thorpe Park or Alton Towers Details: An enjoyable day trip to either Thorpe Park/Alton Towers, two of the biggest theme parks in the United Kingdom. 4. UCL Thai Night Date: February or March Venue: TBC Details: The UCLU Thai Night is organized annually by the UCLU Thai society in order to allow all Thai students to participate in a play. It is the society’s biggest event and is attended by a large number of students from various universities every year. The quality and scale of the play has increased each year and we hope to continue this. The aim of this play is to create stronger bonds between members of the UCLU Thai society. The theme of our play this year is romantic comedy. We are aiming to put emphasis on the diversity of the play by incorporating a broad range of characters and live bands. 5. Thai Night Dinner Date: March Venue: TBC Details: Following a successful Thai Night, the crew normally arrange a fun dinner/party to thank everyone for their contributions. 6. Shopping/Short Trip Date: late October Venue: Bicester Village, TBC Details: Halfway through the second term, the society provides a break from your grueling and demanding first year. A one-night or day trip to the countryside outside the capital should give a relaxing rest and take your minds off your studies. 7. Samaggi Games Date: TBC Venue: TBC Details: Samaggi Games is the biggest event of ‘Samaggi Samagom’, a society which aims to connect all Thai students in the United Kingdom. Samaggi Games is a sporting event which gathers Thai students from numerous universities in the United Kingdom to participate. The games consists of major sports such as football, basketball and badminton. As we all know, a sport a day keeps the doctor away. 8. Leavers Dinner Date: Late March Venue: TBC Details: This is the last event of the academic year before we enter the stressful exam season. The leavers’ dinner is a final gathering of the Thai Society to thank the third years and post-graduates for their priceless guidance toward the lower years. In addition to the events listed above, there will be food trips in which we are taking you to experience top-quality Thai food around London. Please join our society, registration can now be done by going; online at UCLU.org, log in and choose to join the society, or (From Tuesday 14th October onwards) walk-in to CSC reception desk - 2nd floor, Bloomsbury Theatre building.
