A very happy Emancipation Day 2014 to Trinidad and Tobago. It is now officially 180 years since the brutal realities of slavery ended in the British Empire and yet , I reflect that maybe an institutionalized slavery-economic , social and political- exists to the present day. What really is the message of Emancipation? Is it the termination of chattel ownership of another human being or is it something else? Ponder the plight of those who must flock to a political rally for whichever colour lest a proverbial knife be held to their throats , threatening to sever their economic lifelines wherein they labour for a mere pittance in extremities of weather and terrain. Is this not a latter day bondage? Consider too that we live in a society where for a rotating period of five years, we impose people upon us who are free to work their malevolent will on the largesse won by the blood, sweat and toil of all who stock the treasury with liquidity. Consider deeply these thoughts and ask yourself if we can consider ourselves to be truly liberated. .......Cherish the struggles of the ancestors, take pride in your heritage, and have a festive and safe Emancipation holiday my people......PEACE AND BLESSINGS
