A year ago, I spoke these vows to you, mahal. Happy one year anniversary!!! Lovey, It’s a little hard for me to believe that the moment is finally here. I spent the better part of my twenties imagining what life would be like when I finally met the person who would put up with my wacky and sometimes weird ways. I would proclaim out into the universe and to even God himself to bring into my life a boy who would take my heart and nurture it, protect it, love it, challenge it, and promise to keep it for the rest of his life. I spent many hours dreaming about meeting my one and only. And then, time stopped when you came into my life. You are the boy from my dreams. From your frizzy hair, your “I just woke up” surfer voice, to your slightly off the beat dancing --- the person once living in my dreams is now standing up here with me. Our first date at Tonalli restaurant, my heart skipped a beat when I saw you wearing your much too baggy bubble coat, flashing me a big toothy grin, with your bushy eyebrows raising up and down incessantly like you were selling me a used car. And then you talked. You talked endlessly about your dreams about starting a family, traveling around the world, your passion for teaching, wanting life long partnership and I felt safe. You’ve always made me feel safe. You made me a believer of love at first sight, because I knew I loved you from the very beginning. I promise to always ask for kissys, to always scratch your back when you’re itchy, to teach you a new tagalog phrase every day so that you’ll someday be fluent enough to talk about people behind their backs with a smile on your face so they won’t know, to remind you to drink more water, to fall in love with you when you bounce walk toward me on the street and to make you grilled cheese sandwiches when you’re hungry in the middle of the night. I promise to always listen to you. To hear you talk about your endless fascination for politics, Syria, life in outer space, reading anything and everything Japanese or Korean on any signs you come across even if I don’t understand. I promise to hold your hand, to sit closer when you ask and to comfort you in times of sorrow, and to make you giggle before bedtime by making you belly dance. At this very moment, I am looking at my love. My best friend. My soul mate. My mahal. My everything. And my soon-to-be husband. So to break the momentum of this unusually emotional moment, I’d like to ask you to do something for me that will forever be one of the many the reasons that I will continue to fall in love with you. Will you belly dance for me? vimeo/m/88499983
