ABOUT HON. Sagir A A Haruna s DEFECTION TO THE PDP. Hon. Sagir A.A Haruna, today, officially defected from the oppositions APC to solidly cement a place in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe. He presented the letter before the House while in a sitting today at the Gombe State House of Assembly. Hon. Sagir, who emerged victorious during the 2011 election under the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has come under a serious pressure and has persistently been sidelined ever since the decision by Danjuma Goje to join the APC. Tagged by many as a true democrat, Hon. Sagir has positioned himself through sheer determination to make sure that he keeps the interest of his people, who trusted his candidature and massively came out en mass to vote for him during the erstwhile 2011 polls. It could be recalled that Hon. Sagir A.A alongside, Hon. Khamisu Mailatanrki underwent a series of threats and intimidation by the then PDP-led Government. However, they remain persistent in their course to emerging victorious, dumping all sort of intimation even after it was conspicuously known to them that there was a lot of panic and harassment deeply instilled on the minds of the masses by those at the helm of power. Hon. Sagir stood firm to resist all these ploys and at the end of the day, he emerged victorious in an election somewhat impossible to win given the routine in which elections are being won then and considering the fact that he was an opposition. Hon. Sagir, as he is characteristically known to be a man full of humility, integrity, approachable... has done quite alot in his own capacity as a State House of Reps member to help provide the dividends of democracy to his own people. He had purchase so many motorcycles which were subsequently shared to his constituents to smoothen transportation and help improve their standards of living. He had given a number of youths a little token from his own capacity to start up a profit-making venture giving the very difficult situation of our people in the north. He had paid WAEC, JAMB to mention but few to lucky candidates. The reason behind Hon Sagirs defection is not far fetched, and however, if you are in his shoes, you would do the same thing. It is a not a new fact that Hon. Sagir A.A, alongside Mailatarki were the architects behind the deployment of APC in Gombe state - a party that gained an unprecedented support. However, with the defection of some prominent politicians, who are not needed in the PDP to the APC, Hon. Sagir A.A alongside his colleagues were sidelined with their voices un heard and unused. It has even extended to the level in which the party they laboured tremendously to build is now totally out of their grasp. The party keeps moving far away from their grasp and sight as the days keep moving. During the formation of the ward and state executives, none of their people were represented and reckoned with. A series of complain and petition to the APC National body proves to be abortive and no concrete action was done to listen to their cries. With elections fast approaching, Hon. Sagir will definitely need to choose from two options: It is either he remains in the APC and be a spectator - that is, irrelevant or he leapfrogs to the PDP, which will give him a ticket and where he is promised love and will be carried along. Now, if you are in his shoes, what would you do? Would you rather remain in a party in which one man is single-handedly running it as though it is a family affairs? What then is the dividends of democracy as well as internal democracy? Isnt democracy supposed to give everyone the chance to contest irrespective of all sort of differences? Constitutionally, everyone is entitled to contest for any office as long as he matches the criteria. Therefore, in as much as politics is a game of interest, Hon. Sagir A.A, to me, has done the right thing. We know Sagir A.A, and we are indeed very sad to see him leaving the progressives in order to join the devils umbrella giving his undoubted potentials. However, with the glaring injustice done to him, coupled with the decision of the APC National body not to take a much-needed action, we have lost him. Meanwhile, I wish Hon. Sagir A.A all the best in the PDP and I do hope he will continue to be a real democrat as we know him. He will be an asset to the ruling PDP. Abdullahi Auwal Affan Buba Abuya Rabiu B Goro Adamu A.
