#ACCA #F5 #June14 #ACCAReloaded How to Pass Paper F5: F5 is considered as one of the unpredictable papers of Fundamental level. Many students find it difficult to PASS despite its easy syllabus (because major portion of syllabus is already studied and passed in F2). The main reason for this is the fact that students do not appreciate the fact that F5 is very practical paper (unlike some other papers such as Paper F4, F6 or F7 etc where your bookish knowledge can be enough to pass). Though F5 does not have a very big syllabus but it has many different kind of small topics and examiner can take any of that to form base of his 20 marks question. Secondly, selective study can totally be a disaster as it is almost obvious that question will be formed from each part of syllabus (Cost accounting, Budgeting, Variances, Decision making, Performance measurement). It is easy to get 50/100 as compared to 50/80 .So there is no important portion of syllabus, all are equally important. Dont leave or neglect any part of syllabus but try to get more grip on relatively smaller part of syllabus from which question is obvious (such as variances and budgeting). There are topics in Paper F5 that help you significantly to EARN A PASS in Exam i.e. Variances, this is the area which is regularly examined and is considered relatively very easy portion among all. If a student is successful to score 15 to 18 marks in this question, he/she is left with 32 marks which he can score from 80 marks still available to him/her. One thing that students should bear in mind is that in every exam there is one technical and difficult question that gives you the feeling that you will be unable to Pass the exam but good attempt at easy portions like Variances can compensate this. Another thing which students normally underestimate is theoretical portion. Even if some students consider it they only try to cram essay but the most important thing is to link the essay portion with the scenario given in question. Remember!!! Examiner does not write a single useless line which means every line written in scenario has some importance so utilize your reading time in most possible efficient way and concentrate on each line and word. We will recommend you BPP study text and Kaplan as Exam Kit. Along with Kit try to practice (atleast) last 2 years exams question as it will give you an idea of examiners approach. But remember practicing past papers or kit is of very little help if your concepts are not clear. As mentioned earlier the paper is of practical nature so without solid and clear concepts you wont be able to solve questions. In fact the most important tip I always give for F5 (and F9) consists of three words Crystal Clear Concepts. Reading examiner article (especially for those topics with which you are facing problems) and examiner reports are of great help as well. Try reading them at least once before exam. Examiner Comments and reports reading shall be part of your Preparation as this way you get to familiarize yourself with Examiner and try to understand what Examiner wants from you. Most of the students fail because they do not know what Examiner wants from them even though they are conceptually totally clear but are unable to focus on points that examiner wants them to write. Last but not the least remember this is a Performance Management Paper and not the Cost accounting paper. Yet Performance measurement is the most neglected portion of syllabus by students. You need to solve each question in a way that it increases the performance of organization.
