*******ADMIN SPOTLIGHT******* NIKKI THOMPSON As a way to recognize all the hard work that our group admins do, I thought it would be nice to get to know them a little better. Every few days a new admin will be featured. Introducing (fellow Canadian) NIKKI THOMPSON! Thank you Nikki for all your hard work! Q: When did you become an admin/How long have you been an admin? A:I was asked to become an admin about 10 months ago in Feb of 2014. It was soon after my persistence with diligently doing research and being very picky about what Id try on my curly hair. I had finally found my happy place in making no and low poo work for curly hair and my very patient and insightful Guru Clare Knight read my thoughts on my research and my hair issues and guided me with her wisdom. I was super surprised and honoured when she asked me if Id be interested in becoming an Admin. Q:Did you become a member before, at the same time or after starting no/low poo? A:I became a member about a week after I chose to cut out commercial shampoo and conditioner and in my quest for the answer I found this awesome group amidst my research. Q:When did you start your no/low poo journey? A: The last time I shampooed was early July 2013. I only know this because I started a blog CurlyGirlGoesNoPoo to document what I was doing, the ideas I was gathering and how it was working on my dry frizzy curly head of hair. I find it amusing when people in the group offer advice from my blog by quoting the link, I also get a warm fuzzy feeling because it wasnt just my experience for myself, but to help others avoid some of the same struggles. Q:What lead you to start no/low poo? A: A hairdresser bill with a cut and highlights and tip over $300 and the product price at over $200 for a 4-6 month supply... When it rang up at $500 before tip... I put the product back, paid for the service, gave a big tip and walked away from the salon knowing this madness must stop and immediately!!!! I started analyzing my hair, and the fact that every new conditioner only worked a short time before my hair would get bored and start acting up again. I felt like Id tried everything over the counter and it was all the same, just different brands and a few different ingredients. I started experimenting with deep conditioning and adding oil on my ends. Then I started googling wondering what the ancestors used to do and alas.... The no poo world of scary unknown but exciting possibilities were revealed on my screen!! Q: What makes you most excited about no/low poo now? (saving money, avoiding chemicals, extending your washes, healthier hair) A: All of the above. But when it comes to having great and healthy hair AND money in my pocket, I want to do the evil witch laugh!!! Q: Describe your transition and what helped you make it through. A: A lot of buns! Omg, every day for forever!!! Some aloe butter to tame the hairline frizzies (thanks Clare Knight) while I transitioned to low poo and no product to help with styling. First, before no poo, I washed once a week. Then I tried BS and ACV and it was a disaster. I wont even go there. At least I can say I tried it and speak from experience. I waited 2 weeks in the summer until my soapnuts order arrived... Supposed to be saving money but still spending!! I liked soapnuts and believed low poo could work but my hair was dry. I needed more. At the time I was raving about a handmade soap bar my shop owner friend was making that cured the eczema on my hands and eliminated the need for my to use body lotion. It was all saponified oils and my skin loved it! She told me she had customers (men) using her soap bar and I thought that was nuts. I did some research and asked some questions to the group and got curious... Lets just say when I heard she had made an argan oil soap bar, likely to entice me to try the soap bar on my curly hair, it worked because with the added argan oil, I knew that would nourish my hair like no other!! And, it did. The only problem was that the soap stripped my sebum, but added lovely oils to my hair. At that point, I could tell the difference. It’s like authentically nourished hair with sebum vs oiled hair with oil. Hard to explain actually. So, I started only cleansing my scalp with soap and using ACV all over. Around 3 months later I found hair nirvana curlygirlgoesnopoo.blogspot.ca/2014/01/beat-frizz.html
