AFC READY TO ROB THE BANK AFC Leopards resume their Premier League assignment this weekend when they take on KCB at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday. This will be new tactician James Nandwa’s first Premiership test since taking over the helms at the Den last week. Buoyed by a one nil victory over Chemelil Sugar in a GoTv Shield Pre-Quarter Finals Match played at Nakuru, the tactician exuded confidence that his boys are ready to build on that win to turn their fortunes in the Premiership quest. “The weekend result may be the catalyst we badly needed to lift the team’s morale and confidence in their remaining matches.” Observed the Harambee Stars Assistant Coach. Leopards have posted mixed results in the KPL recently that ultimately claimed the jobs of the entire technical bench. However, judging by the performance against Chemelil, a side they hadn’t defeated for a long spell, the team seems to have found their winning magic. Their weakest link in recent times, defense department, stood firm during the Saturday’s match that Goalkeeper Martin Musalia was barely tested. Trailing league leaders and traditional rivals Gor Mahia by nine points adds weight to the demanding fans’ assertions that nothing short of victory can reverse the slim chances of clinching the coveted Premiership title that has been elusive for 15 successive years. And Coach Nandwa is seized of the matter. “We will try to perform well in our remaining matches starting with KCB and see what happens with our direct competitors. Football is unpredictable and who knows, we may have the last laugh.” Hoped Nandwa. However, the Sunday’s opponents are very tricky and Nandwa will have to prepare his charges very well. The head-to-head record between the two sides shows a tie of wins and draws between them. While KCB has enjoyed a good run of results that has propelled them to third position on the log, AFC’s is a case of opposite polar as they have endured four matches without a win much to the chagrin of their loyal and demanding fans. Leopards should be wary of conceding early goals as KCB are known to build on that to frustrate and silence opponent’s fans by time wasting and feigning injuries. It is bitter-sweet news for Leopards faithful as Captain Martin Imbalabala is unavailable for the clash after accumulating five yellow cards while want-away midfield kingpin Peter Opiyo makes a return after his self-initiated move to Oman fell through. Opiyo’s presence will provide the team with various options in the midfield while Imbalabala’s absence will be a big blow to the partnership he had with Anthony Kimani. But coach Nandwa was adamant that he has enough players to cover well in the skipper’s absence. The match will be played at Nyayo Stadium at 3pm...afcleopards.net
