AFN Delegation Returns In Batches -As Nesiama Commends, Athletes, Coaches By Oke OOluku, in Mauritius Nigeria’s delegation to this year’s African Junior Athletics Championship, which held in Mauritius from last Thursday to Sunday, will start return home in batches this week, with the last set billed to touch down at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos on Thursday. While the athletes, who made the country proud by emerging winners of the three-day competition, will arrive on the earliest batches out of Mauritius, SportsDay can report that the last delegation will consist mostly of officials and journalists, who will catch a flight for South Africa on Wednesday night before connecting to Lagos and arrive early Thursday. Meanwhile, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) technical director, Navy Commodore Nesiama Omatseye has expressed a deep sense of gratitude to the athletes, coaches and support staff for the victory of Team Nigeria in Mauritius. Nesiama described the victory as a deserved one and said he is happy to have won the three Africa championships - senior 2013 (Benin Republic), youth 2013 (Warri) and junior 2013 (Mauritius) - in the spate of one year. He stated further that there is something good in what the AFN is doing whether anyone wants to accept it or not, especially with the IAAF High Performance Centre in Port Harcourt, but also admitted that there is still room for further improvements in Nigerian athletes’ performances in all departments. The AFN technical guru said: "This victory makes me happy that in my time as the Technical Director of the AFN. We have won the continental championships at the senior, junior and youth levels within a year. "The coming in of the High Performance System in our sports which is commendable that would further raise the stakes in our processes of development and performance." "I would want to commend the President Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Evangelist Solomon Ogba for his zeal and dogged determination to succeed. “I also commend the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi and DG NSC, Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye for their renewed support for athletics. The union now forged between the leadership in the NSC and the AFN is a partnership that would surely work."
