ALEX FERGUSON HITS OUT AT LIVERPOOL - A FEW POINTS * AF says Kenny Dalglish was wrong in his unequivocal backing of Luis Suarez over the strikers racist abuse of Patrice Evra. * AF: Liverpool wore those T-shirts supporting Suarez, which I thought was the most ridiculous thing for a club of Liverpools stature. I think Kenny was falling back on the chip on the shoulder. The problem I felt was there was no Peter Robinson at Liverpool. He would never have allowed the situation to be handled like it was. The young directors there idolised Kenny and there was no-one to say: Hey, behave yourself, this is out of order, this is Liverpool Football Club. ... The FA asked us several times not to discuss it, but Liverpool would not leave the subject alone. David Gill would not have allowed any manager to handle it in that way. * AF says he was surprised Liverpool appointed Brendan Rodgers as manager. * AF says Michael Owen would have been one of the great strikers in the world had he joined United when he was 12. Liverpool basically didnt look after him (fitness). * AF admits he tried to sign Fernando Torres twice before he went to Liverpool. Also came close to signing Stan Collymore but glad he never. * AF calls former Redss boss Rafa Benitez a control freak in his book and says his teams were dull and that one Benitez starting XI was the most unimaginative Liverpool side he had ever encountered. Rafa basically lucky and claims even Liverpool players couldnt understand the instructions he gave from the touchline. * AF: The mistake he (Rafa) made was to turn our rivalry personal. Once you made it personal, you had no chance because I could wait. I had success on my side. Benitez was striving for trophies while also taking me on. That was unwise. So, on television puts his glasses on and produces this sheet of paper. Facts. The facts were all wrong. All I said in reply was that Rafa was obviously bitter about something. That was me saying to him: look, youre a silly man. You should never make it personal. * AF: Stewart Downing cost £20million. He had talent but was not the bravest or quickest. £20million? For Liverpool to return to the level of us and Manchester City was clearly going to require huge investment. Anfield has not moved on. Even the dressing rooms are the same as 20 years ago. My reading of their squad was that they needed eight players to come up to title-winning standard. * AF said Liverpool bought badly in the 1990s. * AF says Steven Gerrard was not a top top player ... however he admits he was interested in buying him in 2005 when Chelsea made an approach ... added that when Scholes and Roy Keane were playing together against Liverpool, Gerrard seldom had a kick ... questions why he was not played centrally more often under Rafael Benitez and says the midfielder has had more success at international level than club. * AF also dismisses the signings of Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll by Liverpool. * AF praises Gerard Houllier but says Rafa Benitez only made two top-class purchases in Torres and Reina.
