ALI AND LEADERSHIP: A man walked in by Imam Ali (AS) - during his civil war ridden Khilafah - and found him mending his old worn-out sandal (as his brother the Messenger of Allah SAW used to do). So Ali asks this man: How much do you think is the value of this Sandal?. The man says: Nothing. Ali says: By Allah, Imarah (leadership of the Ummah) is of no more value to me than this Sandal, save to establish the Truth or refute Falsehood (from the Nahj al-Balaghah). Note: This story refutes both the Rafidis and Nasibis, who portray Ali as a power-hungry person fighting for worldly leadership. Indeed, when Ali (AS) was appointed by the Muhajirin and Ansar as the Khalifah after the murder of Sayyidna Uthman (RA), he told them: I am better off as an Adviser (وزير) to you than a leader (أمير)!!!
