ALMUSTAPHA"S ACQUITTAL AND 2015, A POLITICAL STRATAGEM? During President Goodluck Jonathan"s campaign in 2011, "BREATH OF FRESH AIR" was the anthem. Nigerians from all divides, irrespective of their religious, political and cultural affiliations, came together to rally round this new face of hope, so they said. The "i had no shoes" credo of his was the political effulgence he unleashed on gullible Nigerians to weep emotional sentiments that transmuted to massive votes he garnered throughout the six political zones of the country. Two years into his administration, his popularity and acceptance has waned drastically, Nigerians have seen his "Breath of Fresh air" credo as a cacophony of deceitful melody that has led them to parody. To nigerians, Jonathan was a wrong buy,he lacked the political clout to steer nigeria to eldorado. Nigerians in the criticism of President Jonathan, fired from all cylinders, the opposition are having a field day, the northern oligarchy have not spared Jonathan and his administration. From all divides, it has been virulence, insolence, decimation and disparaging of his person. Bulk of the political opposition comes from north hence his resolve to pacify the north. The north refused to support him come 2015 and inorder to assuage their feelings, he embarked on fence mending. He started by granting the dreaded sect from the north(BOKO HARAM) amnesty, after they had unleashed mayhem and chaos in the country. He did that to pacify the north, the rest is history. He even went further to employ divide and rule tactics by infiltrating the north and member of the opposition, in the person of Senator Yerima, a two time governor of Zamfara state, a serving senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, a member of APC. Recently, Senator Yerima, gathered islamic and religious leaders from the north, on a solidarity visit to President Jonathan, pledging unalloyed support from the north to his second tern bid. Overwhelmed Jonathan, promised to make him FCT minister in the next cabinet reshuffle,he also promised to appoint a northern minister from his state. Furthermore, he also tinkered with the idea of making him his running mate in 2015, all in a bid to garner votes from the north.A deft political calculation!. Even the once vocal Niger state governor who said Jonathan would not be supported by the north to contest for a second term has beaten a tactical retreat, by saying that Jonathan can negotiate with north, a double speak! The latest masterstroke is the acquittal and release of major Almustapha by the court, another benefit from the expansive munificence of President Jonathan. The Umbrage his release has generated among nigerians ,especially the Abiola family is unsettling, the gnashing of teeth in unmitigated anguish upon receipt of the news by some sections of the country is confounding while in the north, especially kano state, the reception of the news has reached fever pitch, with songs of jubilation and appreciation renting the air. The paschal question is,is there a centrality of Almustapha"s release to the second term ambition of President Jonathan? I wonder what gives President Jonathan, the magna carta to infiltrate the so called cohesive and indivisible north with so much ease, who says he is effete, a sissy and effeminate? This is indeed a stratatgem evolved to whittle down the stance of the north on their opposition to his second term bid, Gov. Lamido of Jigawa state was right when he said that APC was a fraud, that it was made up of decampees from PDP,Senator Yerima"s support for Jonathan has given credence to that. 2015 is still two years away, until then, lets see how far President Jonathan can go in co-opting the north in his second term bid
