AMY TAN WROTE: Tis the season--for Lyme ticks. 15 years ago I was infected, and out of ignorance-- mine, the publics, and 10 doctors-- I did not get diagnosed for 4-1/2 years. I was left with permanent damage in the form of epilepsy and neuropathy. Im lucky that my disease is well-managed. I am not cured, but I am healthy by a new definition--with ongoing treatment I feel great and can do whatever I want. That was not true at one point. On Sunday, Aug 3, ABC7 will air a half-hour segment about Lyme. During the fIrst half, Newscast journalist Cheryl Jennings interviews both me and Dr Raphael Stricker, a Lyme disease expert, who is a physician, as well as a researcher seeking the reasons Lyme is difficult to detect and treat. The CDC used to say the disease was rare, affecting only 30,000 people in the US. Last year, they said the numbers are at least ten times higher--and may even be up to a million. It is now also in every state. The second half of the show is devoted to a family profoundly affected by Lyme--starting when their son was infected as a young boy who was robbed of his childhood. He now still struggles with the disease. Its an important show to watch. You may think Lyme disease wont happen to you. That what I thought too. ABC7 with Cheryl Jennings. Sunday, August 3, at 10 a.m. If you miss the show, or cannot watch the broadcast in your area, the interview will also be available online and will include a list of resources where you can get more information. abc7news/beyond-the-headlines/
