AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CITY COUNCIL The council has been sworn in and had their first meeting. Now it is time for the city council to step up and represent all of the people of Bogata, the ones who voted for them and put them in authority, those who voted against them and all those who did not vote. Less than 25% of the population of Bogata voted but they still require council members to make good decisions affecting them and the city government. They are all part of the citizenship of Bogata and deserve representation by their elected officials. Consider what is best for all of the citizens and do what is necessary to represent them to the best of your ability. I want a mayor and council who knows what has gone wrong down at city hall, who understands the budget and proper management of it, who are willing to tighten their belt and work to make this city work, who understands that people are worried about their jobs thru no fault of their own and who understands that bullying is not right. They should understand that mayors and city councils all over the state are unpaid volunteer positions and are dedicated to work hard for the good of the community. Mayors and council members should be people who give of themselves to help others. I want a council that will agonize over every expenditure and be sure that we get what we ask for and not pay for something we did not get. A council that accepts the grant money with the understanding that it is not FREE MONEY. It is money paid by people just like us in taxes and as such we should get quality work for the dollars. Not ---“oh well its free, we should be glad we got it”. I want a mayor and council that will welcome the public into their meetings and listen to what they are saying. I want a city hall where if someone has a complaint it is taken seriously and no one is discriminated against. I want a mayor and council that understands or will at least look at what the Constitution of the State of Texas says and understand the reason that we are bound by that law. Dillon’s Law was adopted by the Congress of the State of Texas in 1969 and as such tells council members what they can and cannot do. I want a council who will call and utilize TML and make their own decisions in most matters, not rely on a lawyer to do it for them. I want a mayor and council that will read and understand for themselves the Open Meetings Act and Open Records Act and Transparency in our government. This includes not having “Walking Quorums” as in the past. How can a council member possibly vote on a proposal without any open discussion. Not any one person should make decisions, but all be involved with the decision making process by asking what, when, why and where in open meeting. Don’t just sit there and nod your head, but ask some questions. By doing this, citizens feel like council members are representing them. I want a mayor and council that will support and strengthen our police force and fire departments. I want to see Bogata grow and prosper. I want jobs to come here, good jobs. I want to see a clean, drug free city with good streets and clean water. I want Bogata to be a decent, quiet, drug free zone where kids can go to the park and play. I want a city where everyone wants to live. This is OUR government. There is very little that we are not allowed to have open access to.
