ANAMBRA congress comes up next week !Ahead of the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it would commence the party’s congresses in the state as from Wednesday. This came as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Thursday said despite the fanfare, which accompanied the registration of the APC, the party would soon be decimated, while its members run helter skelter to seek refuge in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). A meeting of the interim National Executive Committee (NEC) met yesterday and approved that ward congresses should take place on August 28, while local government and state congresses were to be held on August 30 and 31 respectively. It was gathered that in line with the schedule of activities which was proposed and endorsed by the interim leadership of the party on Wednesday, nomination process leading to the formal selection of the governorship candidate would take place on September 2 in Awka. Following the negotiations, which led to the emergence of Senator Chris Ngige, consensus candidate for the APC in the state, the party leadership had decided to go ahead and conduct primaries to formalise the process. A source said that the party was being mindful of the need to adhere to laid down constitutional procedure for nomination a governorship candidate, and so would want to avoid any controversy that may trail the automatic ticket to Ngige. “The party wants to ensure that due process was adhered to even while encouraging the consensus arrangement. By so doing, it would have avoided any legal trap that might be exploited by mischief makers. This is more so when one of the aspirants has objected to the manner in which the Governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha, tried to intervene in the matter,” he said. THISDAY
