Or there was a boycott? ---------------------------------------------------------------- VOLLEY STANDOUTS INVITED TO TRYOUTS PROMISING collegiate standouts Alyssa Valdez, Mika Reyes and Jaja Santiago are among the talented players invited to join the tryouts for the national women’s under-23 volleyball team which will compete in major international competitions, including the 28th Southeast Asian Games. The three are expected to breeze through the selection process of the Philippine Olympic Committee-organized management committee headed by POC vice president Joey Romasanta. They are expected to form the nucleus of a national squad, which will remain intact until the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. Valdez plays for the Ateneo Lady Eagles, while Reyes is with La Salle, and Santiago is with National University. Romasanta said they are looking for a perfect blend of youth and experience when the national team is formally assembled. The national tryout for both men and women squads, according to Romasanta, will be held Jan. 10 and 11. Seasoned coaches Roger Gorayeb and Sammy Acaylar will help supervise the selection process with the help of American beach volleyball guru Eric Lecain. The nucleus of the women’s squad is being eyed to take part in the Asian U-23 Women’s Championship in Manila in May. “We want the team to be as young as possible so it can also compete in the Asian U23. Then, in the SEA Games, we will just insert a handful of veterans to make the team more competitive against the likes of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia,” said Romasanta.
