APC may pick Fayemi as Buhari’s running mate Indication emerged in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, at the weekend that former military Head of State, General Muhammudu Buhari and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), might have concluded plans to pick Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, as his running mate. Speculations were rife before now that the political calculations within APC favoured the choice of Fayemi as running mate to retired general. The APC had in the past fielded a non-politician for the position. For example, Fola Adeola, a seasoned banker, was picked as running mate to former Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadum, in the 2011 Presidential Election while Buhari settled for a radical cleric, Pastor Tunde Bakare. Fayemi, being the only Christian, among the governors in the South West geo-political zone, would have been in a very good stead to assume the position ahead of his other colleagues in the zone. Besides, it was learnt that Buhari was keen on choosing somebody from the nation’s fountain of knowledge and land of honour, even in 2011 Presidential Election before he was prevailed upon by certain forces to pick Pastor Bakare. In fact, the name of former governor, Niyi Adebayo, was repeatedly linked to the move on the basis of similar criteria. It is believed that Fayemi with his political experience and background as an activist would ,no doubt pull more weight than any non-political element this time around. In his reaction, the Chairman of APC in Ekiti State, Jide Awe, who was not categorical on the matter simply said, “Let us continue to work hard and pray. It’s only in these that we can prosper and excel. When it is time, we would all know what would happen.” Watchers of political events in Ekiti State were of the view that the recent romance between the duo was a pointer to the fact. General Buhari, few days ago, was a guest of Fayemi where he inaugurated some projects executed by the governor. More importantly,the sweet comments passed on Fayemi by the General was believed to have been loaded with meanings . General Buhari while inaugurating the Ekiti Parapo Square expressed amazement about Fayemi’s achievements which he attributed to visionary leadership. Buhari urged Nigerians to always look out for visionary leaders like Fayemi to entrust them with the mandate to lead. Buhari noted that the State has really proved itself as an intellectually endowed state under Fayemi as exhibited in the roll call of the recipients of the 2014 merit awards. ------------------ Whats your take? should APC pick Fayemi as running mate to Buhari?
