ASSOCHAM Interactive Session on FMCG Sector - “The way forward for the Food Processing Industry” with Shri Siraj Hussain, Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industry 12th December, 2013 New Delhi FMCG Sector has its distinct position in India’s growth. As the fourth largest sector in the Indian economy, the sector is expected to touch US $ 74 billion by 2018. A major contributor to this sector is the Food Processing Industry which has become an indispensable part of the Indian consumer. Its potential for employment generation and share in industrial production in the economy cannot be ignored. Many International companies leveraging their brands are already taking advantage of India’s consumption story. The Food Processing Industry in India is facing various challenges and constraints which require immediate attention. Some of the challenges are: • Multiple laws and regulations constricting the pace of growth • Ambiguities in product approval procedures • Negative propaganda against processed food • Weak Infrastructure resulting in an inefficient supply chain • Cascading effect of multiple taxes It is imperative for the government to provide a conducive environment to fuel growth in this sector. Domestic industry with nascent brands needs to be supported and encouraged to build a strong businesses which are a foundation to build world class brands. Recognising the enormous significance of this sector, ASSOCHAM under its National council on FMCG, Brand Protection and Promotion is organizing an Interactive Session with Shri Siraj Hussain, Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industry with the stake holders in the Food Processing Industry with a vision to proactively work on the above issues and find a resolution.
