AUGUST WILDERNESS OF THE MONTH: Spice Run Spice Run is the eighth and final West Virginia Wilderness. It is located in Pocahontas and Greenbrier Counties, just south of Calvin Price State Forest. It was designated as part of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 on March 30, 2009, with 6,030 acres. Elevations range from 2,000 to over 2,800 feet in the wilderness area. Overstory vegetation consists mostly of oak, hickory, and maple, with some pockets of hemlock. The understory contains rhododendron, mixed shrubs, grasses, and ferns. Spice Run is the only West Virginia Wilderness that does not contain any trails. This creates a unique wilderness experience for visitors, who must rely on their own navigation skills.
