About six months ago I was invited to speak about my book A Peoples Art History of the United States and my art practice at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana on Sept. 15th. I was greatly looking forward to this date. Sharing work with the students, meeting faculty, reconnecting with good friends who teach there. I have declined the invitation for a specific reason. Like many others, I will not present at UIUC until Chancellor Wise honors the contract to hire Professor Steven Salaita who was fired for a tweet he posted over the Summer about the crisis situation in Gaza. This blatant disregard for academic freedom has led to 1800-plus academics, scholars, artists, and others refusing to associate with UIUC until the administration offers Salaita his position back.
