Abu ad-Dardaa narrated [Saheeh Muslim, No.6588]: The Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu alayhe wa sallam) said: «No believing servant supplicates for his brother behind his back (in his absence), except that the Angels say: The same be for you too.» al-Imaam an-Nawawee comments [Riyaadh as-Saaliheen #1494]: This hadeeth makes it evident that one who prays for someone in his absence also stands to benefit from it because the angel appointed for the task of praying for those who pray for others will pray for him, saying, O Allaah! Grant him also the same which he has asked for others. He was the first person to really help me along with Islam during my first few years as a new Muslim. As a young man moving from Philly to Maryland, I was a little rough around the edges. I was a younger person trying to practice Islam but found many difficulties along the way. Despite all of this, he never chased me away or made me feel unwelcome. He encouraged me and educated me about many issues in Islam. This reminds me of when I wanted to buy a house using riba some years ago and he informed me that it was impermissible for a Muslim to indulge in riba. I tried to argue with him and he patiently showed me the verses from the Quran and I had no choice but to accept it. After that incident, I desired to be around him as much as I could as he was my first shaykh. I would ask him everything about Islam and he would tell me what he knew. If he didnt know, he would find the answers. We both worked for the same company and made pretty good money. Yet, his wife would complain to my wife because Jamal would give a lot of money away to help other people in the community who couldnt pay rent or bills and as a result, he didnt have a lot of money for himself. This was known to the people who lived with us in Laurel, Md. where he served as the assistant Imam to Abdul-Jaleel at Masjid Ghuraba formerly known as Ayah Islamic Center. After Ramadan one year, he said he was going to make itikaaf. So, just wanting to be around him, I decided to make itikaaf too. We stayed in Al-Huda Masjid in Maryland and thats where he taught me how to read Surah Al-Feel (Surah no.105) in the masjid. I couldnt read Arabic that well but he was teaching me how to read that chapter from the Quran. As itikaaf was coming to an end, he said he was going to try and make hajj that year. So I asked him, how can you make hajj? He replied that there was a group sponsoring people to make hajj. So he encouraged me to apply as he was going to do so we could make it together. At the time, I figured you had to be a knowledgeable Muslim to make hajj and at that time, I didnt know anything. So he gave me shaykh Al-Abaanis book about making hajj. Al-hamdulilah, we were both accepted for the hajj trip in 2003. We were extremely excited. I never thought that I could make hajj especially as a Muslim who really didnt know anything. Once we arrived in Saudi Arabia, we were in the same hotel room at the Movenpic in Madeenah. I wanted to go wherever he went so I could learn something new about Islam. However, one day I overslept and when I awoke, he was gone. When he returned, he said that they visited shaykh Abdullah Bukhari in Madeenah. I was disappointed that I didnt get the chance to meet the shaykh but he gave me all of the details that took place from the meeting. While living in Laurel, Jamal would give quite a few Khutbahs. The one Khutbah that he gave that stood out the most to me, even to this day, was the one mentioning a hadeeth Al-Qudsi. The one he mentioned was in the 40 hadeeth of Imam An-Nawawi, where it says Indeed I have made oppression haraam for myself and made it haraam between you all, so do not oppress (people).... At that time, this hadeeth was one of many things in helped change me for the better, insha Allah. That was the first time I had ever heard that Hadeeth. I remember one time I was looking for him and he had traveled to Chester Pa. He told me that the students of knowledge were in town. So I asked him, who were the students knowledge and what did they do? He said they were the ones who study with the scholars of Islam and aid the Muslims. I was impressed and wanted to be like those people. He was the first person to ever tell me anything about students of knowledge and after that, I wanted to seek knowledge. Alhamdulilah, we do not praise anyone above Allah. I just wanted to point out how this brother has affected my life and many others. I ask Allah to reward Jamal Muhammad for any good that I have done or am able to do through me studying Islam! I ask Allah to make that saqadah Al-Jariyah for him. I ask Allah to give his family patience in dealing with these extremely hard times, Indeed Allah is able to do all things! I love Jamal dearly for Allahs sake and I ask Allah to cure him as He is able to do all things! If anyone is able to help, either financially or dua or sending him a letter just reminding him of Allah, or visiting him and his family and youre in the Atlanta area, Im sure they will appreciated it and it will go a long ways in aiding your bother in Islam! Your brother in Islam, Ali Davis
