According to The Telegraph, a United Kingdom-based newspaper, the sound director for The Wizard of Oz and his team spent a week on Catalina Island in 1939. During that time, they recoded the trills, chips and songs of each of the 8,000 birds in the Bird Park. The Bird Park off Avalon Canyon was created by William Wrigley Jr., and it became one of the Island’s major attractions as well as the largest aviary in the world at the time. The sound crew recorded more than 15,000 feet of bird calls, the most complete collection of bird noises made up to that time. To create the eerie noises of the Haunted Forest for the film, the sound team distorted and overlapped the bird calls they had collected on Catalina Island. Here just some of them in this clip from the movie. ow.ly/AkwIs
