According to new research, rates of diabetes in U.S. children rose sharply between 2001 and 2009, with the prevalence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes increasing 21% and 30.5%, respectively. The increases were seen in both boys and girls, and among most racial groups. The largest increases for both types of diabetes were in 15- to 19-year-olds. Researchers aren’t quite sure what’s behind the increases, particularly for type 1 diabetes, as it is an autoimmune disorder.
