Act now for safer sanctuaries in Wales RSPCA Cymru urges its supporters to get on board with a new campaign calling for regulations for sanctuaries Thursday 18 December 2014 RSPCA Cymru has launched a new phase of a campaign in a bid to encourage the Welsh Government to introduce regulations for animal sanctuaries. There are around 90 animal welfare establishments, also known as ‘sanctuaries’, in Wales but no specific rules govern how they operate. Almost anyone can set-up and run a sanctuary even without the skills, knowledge or resources that many would expect them to have. These services care for a wide range of animals with complex needs. Often expert care is needed and detailed plans are required to plan for animal illness, staff absence, and financial pressures. Whilst riding schools, cat boarders and dog breeders are all licensed by their local council - offering additional protection to animals - sanctuaries are not. When things go wrong, there is no guaranteed safety net to ensure the animals are adequately cared for. RSPCA Cymru’s Political Campaigns Manager, Martin Fidler Jones, said: “Many of the 90 sanctuaries in Wales may well be operating to a fantastic standard. “However, RSPCA Cymru along with a group of sanctuary operators and experts, agree there should be standards covering the sector to protect the large number of animals cared for in such places. “Today we have launched our new campaign and are calling on our supporters to help us encourage the Welsh Government to introduce regulations to ensure animals in these sectors are better protected and ensure safer sanctuaries in Wales.” To take the action visit rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/walessanctuaries
