Action Alert: Your Help is Needed to Stop Soring of Horses Maryland Votes for Animals works in cooperation with other animal protection organizations to promote animal protection. Attached is an alert from the Equine Protection Department of the Humane Society of the United States. The Equine Protection Department of the Humane Society of the US is strategically reaching out to committed advocates in key states, including Maryland, asking them to contact their federal representatives in the House to ask them to co-sponsor The Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act H.R. 1518. This legislation will protect gaited horses from a hideous practice known as soring, where abusive trainers deliberately inflict pain on the hooves and legs of certain breeds of horses to exaggerate their high-stepping gait and gain unfair competitive advantage at horse shows. We are so close to getting this federal bill passed! Please use the script below and feel free to email Valerie Pringle, in Equine Protection at HSUS, with any questions you might have at [email protected]. To find out more about this hideous form of abuse, check out our page on soring humanesociety.org/issues/tenn_walking_horses/facts/what_is_soring.html Here is our undercover video if you want to see soring firsthand youtube/watch?v=gxVlxT_x-f0&feature=youtu.be Thanks for being the voice of abused horses! If you live in Maryland and your Congressional Representative is not a co-sponsor please ask them to co-sponsor. If you live in Maryland you can find out the name of your Congressional Representative here: mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/frmmain.aspx?pid=legisrpage&tab=subject6&poptype=find&popid= As of 10/3/13 these Representatives were NOT co-sponsors: District 1- Representative Andy Harris https://harris.house.gov/contact-me/email-me 1533 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Phone: 202-225-5311 District 4- Representative Donna Edwards donnaedwards.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=52§iontree=4,52 2445 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Phone: 202-225-8699 District 5- Representative Steny Hoyer https://forms.house.gov/hoyer/webforms/zip_auth.shtm 1705 Longworth House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515 Phone - 202 225-4131 District 8- Representative Chris Van Hollen vanhollen.house.gov/contact/ 1707 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Phone: 202 225-5341 Script to Federal Legislators from Members of Animal Welfare Community on H.R. 1518 The U.S. Capital Switchboard, 202-224-3121, is the best way to reach your federal representatives in the House by phone. Simply call the number and give your zip code and you will be connected to one of your representatives. You will most likely speak with a member of your representative’s staff. Be sure to identify yourself as a constituent. You want to ask your representative to co-sponsor the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 1518. It is always a good idea to leave your name, address, phone number, and email in case any follow -up is needed and to verify your residency in the legislator’s district. Always be polite, persuasive and respectful. You are welcome to use this script: Thanks so much for taking my call. My name is _______________ and I am a constituent of Representative ___________________. I am contacting you to urge Mr. /Ms. _______________to co-sponsor The Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act of 2013, H.R. 1518. Congress passed the Horse Protection Act more than 40 years ago to protect horses from painful soring, yet this abuse continues unabated. A 2010 audit by the USDA Office of the Inspector General exposed how trainers in the industry go to great lengths to evade detection rather than comply with federal law and train horses using humane methods. The audit recommended stiffer penalties and eliminating the flawed system of industry self-policing. Representative Ed Whitfield has introduced a bill that would address these problems and protect horses from abuse. As a constituent and member of the animal welfare community, I urge Representative ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬_______________ to co-sponsor this legislation to fix the gaps in the Horse Protection Act so it can be meaningfully enforced. Thanks so much for your time. I would like to leave my name and contact information.
