Action Needed Dear Colleagues, We need your help today to protect the progress schools are making to improve the nutrition and quality of school lunches. Congress is back in session, and they soon will be voting on some type of spending bill for FY 2015. Though it’s still unclear what form that will take (a continuing resolution or an omnibus spending bill), negotiations are underway. School lunches are getting better. More than 90% of schools are serving more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. But some members of Congress are working to roll back this progress as they reconvene for the lame duck session. They say they just want to provide schools with a little “flexibility,” but in reality their proposed bill would significantly roll back progress, including on whole grains, trans fat, fruits, vegetables, and salt. We especially need outreach in Missouri, as Senator Blunt is playing a key role in this effort. Schools need support, mentoring, and technical assistance to meet challenges, not a free pass to serve junk to kids. And kids need nutrition standards based on science, not politics. Please urge Sen Blunt not to turn back the clock on school foods and help ensure that all children have access to healthy foods at school. A model letter is below or at: https://cspinet.org/takeaction/#/47 You can contact Tracy Henke, Sen Blunt’s Legislative director at [email protected] or call Senator Blunts DC office at 202 224 5721 Please let me know how you can help with activating your members, co workers and friends.
