Adam Bowman Born May 31 1828 Franklin, Pennsylvania Died August 17, 1864 Andersonville Prison, Georgia On August 9, 1862, at the age of 34, Adam enlisted, in the place of another man with the Ohio Regiment being formed. One week after his youngest daughter was born, he reported for duty with E Company 104th O.V.I.. The 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered into the U.S. service on August 30, 1862 at old Camp Massillon. The Regiment would spend most of it’s time on the march skirmishing with the Rebel raiders throughout central Kentucky. The 104th also accompanied General Burnside through Cumberland Gap enduring a harsh winter with lack of food but would go on to be some of the first Union troops to enter Georgia in the Spring of 1864. On May 8 at Maple Hill, it helped in the capture of a Rebel battery of four guns and several hundred Rebel prisoners. While on reconnaissance with 8 other men, Adam was himself captured and then transferred to Andersonville Prison. A few months later on August 17th 1864, he died of disease and starvation along with many fellow soldiers being held there. From the pen of his daughter, Violet, years later. Brave heart to decide between country and loved ones, but mother and wife encouraged him knowing that when he served his country he wished to be a volunteer.
