Addendum to my wrap-up of yesterdays extradome activity: Ive had a few people ask about my free jacket that cost me $290. The jacket in question is a really nice cold weather jacket. Its probably, in all honesty, the nicest winter coat Ive ever owned. Unfortunately, it still inspires a few less-than-pleasant memories whenever I wear it. Back in 2007, when I first got into the car business, I worked for a dealership that wasnt First Team. When November rolled around, they brought out this incentive that if you sold 10 cars in November or a total of 20 cars in November and December, you got the aforementioned jacket free. Only a small handful of people did it. This was when the economy started to get sideways, and the car business was affected first. We just shrugged our shoulders and forgot all about the free jacket. One morning in January, I walked in to work and was told by my manager to go over to the main office and pick up my jacket. What jacket, I asked. The one from the contest in November and December. They decided to give them to yall anyway. So, I went next door to pick up my new jacket and smiled all day while I was comfy warm on the lot. Shortly thereafter, we were issued a memorandum that we werent to wear anything that had the dealerships name on it in our non-working hours. A couple of idiots got into trouble while wearing their work shirts, so we all paid the price. Now, when I was with Circuit City, I made a lot of sales meeting people in my off-work hours while wearing my work shirt. But, no matter; I can play by the rules. Then came payday. We all noticed that our paychecks had a mysterious deduction for $290. We asked our managers what that was for, and were told that it was for the free jacket that the benevolent management had given us, and that we werent allowed to wear anywhere but work. My employment with that dealership ended shortly thereafter. So now, I do wear that coat when the weather calls for more than my favorite L.L. Bean canvas field coat. Even though the name of my former employer is emblazoned on the front and back, and I still get a little p***ed off whenever I think about the whole affair (plus, it also brings back bad memories of the Former Mrs. Genius, as our marriage was irrevocably broken right about then). And I do get a devious little thrill wearing it in forbidden places, like last nights game. Its like the old saying, Forgive your enemy, but never forget the son of a b*tchs name. Especially when its all over your coat.
