First, there are legitimate (in my mind) reasons to attempt to dissuade people from drinking and driving, and the potential intimidation factor of a vehicle checkpoint serves this purpose. However, it appears that many, if not most, police officers today are either not well-briefed in constitutional rights( thanks to the modern diseducation system), or they are being instructed - or permitted - to willfully violate those rights.
