Advanced Programme in Photography Deadline: 30 August 2013 OVERVIEW: The Advanced Programme is aimed at developing contemporary photographers. The course is designed to give you the structure necessary to explore, in your preferred genre, an independent and self-motivated body of photography work as well as a comprehensive portfolio. The APP is best suited for: • Someone who has successfully completed a Market Photo Workshop Intermediate Course or an equivalent level of course (and achievement) from another institution. • A person who can demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge in a portfolio presentation. • Persons with recognized prior learning in photography who wish to develop a critically informed approach to photography practice in different contexts. A limited number of bursaries are available for deserving candidates. Bursaries are awarded on a flexible bonus structure calculated on merit, financial need and performance. COURSE CONTENT: The course is structured into four terms, each with an overriding theme. Lecture content, assignments and major projects will be geared towards a deeper understanding of these four key areas in photography, through modules in the following subjects: Practical/Technical Photography, Visual Culture, Critical Writing and Professional Practice. Practical/Technical Photography focuses on equipping students with specific production and post-production skills, including editorial portraiture, studio practice and digital workflow. This subject will also deal with printing and presentation skills for exhibition. The aim is for students to enhance their technical abilities, test formal and technical possibilities, and better realise their photographic projects. Visual Culture aims to unlock the complexities and impact of the photographic image within historical and contemporary contexts. It will impart an informed, critical understanding of images in relation to social, cultural and political contexts, and assist students with locating their own practice as emerging photographers. Visual Culture will assist students in applying creativity and insight to the taking, processing, printing and editing of photographs relative to a specific project. Critical Writing focuses on writing skills specific to the field of photography. This includes applying different research methods, online literacy, referencing standards, analysing and writing about images, reviewing exhibitions and interpreting critical texts. This subject aims to equip students with the ability to read and write critically to enrich their understanding of photographic theory and practice, and in turn to understand their own image-making processes at a deeper level. Professional Practice introduces students to basic business, project management, administrative skills and other aspects of working as a professional photographer. Professional Practice focuses on negotiating a brief with a client, understanding legal and administrative implications, and drawing up a financial plan based on a realistic assessment of circumstances. Students will be encouraged to visit different establishments and attend presentations by professionals.
