Adventures of Daniel G. Acomb, Sheriff of Livingston County. Dixon Left Geneseo Jail, Batavia NY Daily News, January 16, 1913. ... They then went to Hamilton, Ont. and from there to Welland. They returned to this country shortly before Christmas and went to Rochester, where they lived in a room on Chestnut street. Dixon says he had $69 when he left Batavia. Forged Checks in Dansville. Leaving the girl in Rochester, Dixon says he went to Dansville on December 23rd. When he reached that town he went to the blacksmith shop and represented that he was working for the International Harvester Company and wanted the names of a few influential farmers of means. Among the names the blacksmith gave him was that of William Hartman, a wealthy farmer and nurseryman. On that afternoon Dixon procured two blank checks, which he filled out for $29 and $30, respectively, and signed them William Hartman. At the Rouse millinery store he purchased a womans coat for $14 and tendered the $29 check, receiving the difference of $15 in cash. At another store he purchased a derby hat with the $30 check and received $27.50 in change. Dixon had previously been refused cash on one of his checks at the store of F.F. Hick & Co. The proprietors of that store, knowing Mr. Hartman and suspecting something was wrong, telephoned Sheriff Acomb, who found and arrested Dixon. Dixon gave his names as Fred Miller. He was taken before a justice, who committed him to the Geneseo jail to await the action of the grand jury. How He Escaped From Jail. Dixon tells an interesting story of how he escaped from the Geneseo jail. It was on the afternoon of Christmas day. He asked the sheriff to permit him to telephone to East Bethany. He went into a room where the telephone was, while the sheriff was in another room. He removed his shoes and left the room and building by another door in his stocking feet. He gave the official the slip at 5:30 oclock and started on a dog trot for Rochester. He rode and walked all night. After reaching Rochester he secured a ride in an automobile to Caledonia, walking from there to East Bethany, where he arrived at 7:30 a.m. on December 26th. The story of the escape of the forger from the Geneseo jail was printed in The News at the time. The sheriff verified Dixons story that he reached East Bethany on the morning of the 26th and that he was in such bad shape physically that he was confined to his mothers house two days. Two weeks prior to passing the checks in Dansville Dixon says he worked off a bad check on a merchant at Mt. Morris.
