After 16 long and frustrating days, the government shutdown and default crisis is over -- at least for now. While cooler heads eventually prevailed, Congress failure to find common ground hurt Georgias economy. It should never have happened in the first place. Rather than coming to a much-needed agreement on how to address the debt and our nations fiscal challenges, Congress short-term deal sets us up for yet another potential shutdown in just a few months. In fact, some members of Congress are already saying they are willing to go through another shutdown to advance their political agenda. Sign my petition to Congress today. Tell them: no more shutdowns. Lets ask our Congressional leaders to work together to cut our debt and agree on a budget. The shutdown caused more than $24 billion in damage to our economy and a significant reduction in our overall economic growth rate. It has been estimated that the uncertainty and brinksmanship surrounding our federal budgeting process over the last few years has significantly impacted the overall growth of our economy. Hundreds of thousands of workers -- in both the public and private sector -- were sent home from their jobs. Georgia businesses couldnt apply for small business loans, parents worried about whether their kids Head Start programs were open, and public health officials at the CDC were prevented from doing their jobs to safeguard our public health. The crisis was entirely self-inflicted and should have been avoided. Georgians shouldnt be pawns in Washington political games. As Georgia’s senator, I will strive to solve problems, not create them. I will bring folks together to tackle the real problems Georgia families face. Its what Ive done for the past 25 years, leading the worlds largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. Its the kind of collaboration Ive seen in communities large and small as Ive traveled across Georgia and our nation. Congress needs to learn a lesson about whats working from everyday Georgians. They need to hear from us -- that we demand more from our congressional leaders. Sign my petition to Congress: No more shutdowns. We want collaborative leadership and pragmatic solutions -- not paralysis and not brinksmanship. Its common sense: Politicians in Washington shouldnt shut down the government to advance their political agenda. I hope youll join me in sending a message to Congress, today. Georgia’s motto is Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation. Our citizens and communities deserve leadership that reflects these values. We can do better.
