After I posted pictures yesterday of a overgrown walkway near the school ( see below ) two community volunteers went out this morning to ensure it was safe and clear for people to walk thru and weeded the pathway and cut the overgrown hedges. These young people that do this are unemployed, and rather get their job seekers money for doing nothing, are happy to go out in their own community, tidy it, to ensure its not an eyesore or unsafe area.At a time when council are short staffed and employing temporary staff thru agencies at extortionate rates, I for one would like to see them approach local community groups like ours, see what they are doing, and if there are people that work for free in their community, give them a chance of employment should the need arise.Gone are the days when community groups were all about power ego trips for has beens and wannabes, they need to be used correctly and be supportive within their own area, and be a stepping stone for employment, rather than using agencies and getting staff you know nothing about.I will be putting this proposal to council, and we are working on other ideas on how this voluntary group can be a stepping stone back into employment, be it with local council who neglect the areas we live in, the NIHE who have a duty of care to all tennents, or an outside employer who can see the work young local community volunteers put into their estates, and may well employ one of these young lads who are currently doing community work without any pay.Be nice if people could see in this town that getting involved in your local residents groups, could potentially lead to temporary or even full time employment.Imagine the people it could draw to community volunteering?Well done to thos two lads this morning, no tools, no weekly wage, just a concern for the area you live in.
