After months of probate and loan officer craziness, my mama and I finally closed on my grandmothers house. Our goal was to keep our family in the home she and her siblings grew up in, the home I lived the first 6 years of my life and my college years in, the home my grandparents bought by selling tamales out of their front window. I dont believe in the American dream or that success is measured by real estate ownership, but I am happy that these old walls holding 50+ years of love, laughter, pain, pregnancies, deaths, holidays, and mourning will continue to hold those and future memories. I am happy my parents will have this home to live their retirement decades in. I am happy we will continue holding it down in our little barrio in the face of our own gentrifications. I am happy today.
